Stant 27001 Thermostat Gasket (BU 1) – Original Stant Packaging, from Don's Own Shelf

Keep your car or truck on the road with a genuine Stant 27001, the multi-fit Stant thermostat gasket listed for the Jeep 232 and 258 inline sixes (1975–1990: CJ5, CJ6, CJ7, Cherokee, J10 pickup, Grand Wagoneer and early Wrangler), plus the Mercedes-Benz 190E (1984–1993), the 1975–1976 Alfa Romeo Alfetta and the 1987–1988 Range Rover 3.5L V8. It's a multi-fit gasket: a wide oval with an oval center opening, two "REMOVE" tabs for enlarging the opening, and a field of embossed knockout circles for the different bolt patterns. You rotate it until the holes match your housing, then trim off what you don't need.

Key Features

Stant's own printed application catalogs (1928–1994 and 1995–2017) don't list the 27001. The vehicle list below comes from parts-catalog compatibility data for the Stant 27001 (186 vehicle lines), so treat it as a strong lead and confirm the bolt pattern on your housing.

Compatible Makes & Models (from parts-catalog data)

Note: Always verify fitment for your specific year, make, model and engine, then match the bolt pattern. The full engine-by-engine list is in the fitment appendix below. If you have your old gasket, compare its shape, opening and bolt holes with the photo, or just ask Don and Kathy.

Price is $9.95 plus $3.00 for shipping. Don and Kathy offer a fair deal for this. Buying for a club, a shop, or a whole fleet of project cars? Even better.

At present we have 2 of these Stant thermostat gaskets number 27001 if you want more even some with different numbers let's talk.

Why Buy From Don & Kathy at Don's Obsolete Auto Parts? Don Leask founded one of the earliest online obsolete auto parts businesses (carparts2 on eBay in 1997, the second auto parts store on eBay) and grew it to 11,000–17,000 unique listings. Today, with help from their digital agent Misty ([email protected]), Don and Kathy connect directly with restorers and collectors while preserving their legacy of quality parts. The Stant 27001 Thermostat Gasket: One Gasket, Several Bolt Patterns

Thermostat gaskets are small, but they decide whether a cooling system stays dry. When the thermostat housing comes off a project car or truck, the right gasket is the quiet part that keeps the job from turning into a second trip to the parts counter.

The Stant 27001 takes a different approach from most Stant gaskets. Instead of one gasket cut for one housing, it carries several bolt patterns on one piece. Stant's installation instructions on the back of the card:

  1. Wipe oil, water and foreign material from the thermostat mounting surface on engine and on thermostat housing.
  2. Place thermostat into engine block or water outlet housing, whichever contains the shallow recess (counterbore). NOTE: Copper pellet of thermostat must face towards the engine.
  3. Rotate the gasket about the opening lining up the thermostat and mounting bolt holes in the gasket with the matching holes in the engine or outlet housing.
  4. Replace housing and tighten bolts evenly. Trim excess gasket material.

How It Differs From Its Neighbors Not the same as Stant 27101. The 27001 comes on a "BU 1" card; Stant's 271xx gaskets come on "BB" cards. In Stant's printed catalog the 27101 is listed for cars like the Kaiser and the Mercedes-Benz 190SL, while the 27001 data lists Jeeps, the 190E and the others above. Don's Obsolete Auto Parts carries both, so order by the number your vehicle calls for.

Stant's printed catalogs list dedicated gaskets for some of these engines, for example the Stant 27160 for the Jeep 232 and 258 sixes and the Stant 27138 for the 1975–1977 Alfetta. The 27001 is the multi-fit alternative: one gasket with several bolt patterns that you rotate and trim to fit.

Real-World Fitment Examples (from parts-catalog data)

Keeping Older Cars on the Road Don and Kathy Leask have been part of the classic car world since the early days of the internet. Starting with carparts2 on eBay in 1997, they became one of the largest online sellers of obsolete parts. Now, with their Don's Obsolete Auto Parts site and digital agent Misty, they're making hard-to-find parts discoverable again, connecting owners of rare inventory with the enthusiasts who need them.
